Aidy Boothroyd, as he told The Northampton Chronicle, has now pretty much accepted that the play offs are the most likely end of season outcome for Northampton.

He said: ‘My mindset at the moment is to get into the play-offs, to cement that.

‘Anything above that would be a bonus and to achieve a play-off finish coming from where we were is a massive bonus as well.’

Automatic promotion is still mathematically on for The Cobblers, however that now seems unlikely but he wants his side to continue to go out looking to win games and end the season strong, adding: ‘We are going to go all out to win every single game but we’ll see where it takes us, as simple as that.

‘We’ve had a really good season and we just want to finish it off well.’

With just one point from the past 12 on offer Northampton have gone from a decent bet for automatic promotion into the play offs and have failed to score in six-hours of football.

Football is often about momentum, so The Cobblers will be looking to get this and winning the remaining games would put them into the lottery of the play offs in form, in the probable event that it’s not enough to secure a top three automatic spot.
