Northampton went away from Brackley not only with a pre-season win on Saturday but this win saw the Northamptonshire FA’s Maunsell Cup secured too.

A three-nil win at St James Park, funnily enough another St James’ Park should still be the destination of Ivan Toney, was secured by the Cobblers as the League 2 season moved another step closer.

With David Buchanan and Nicky Adams combining a cross into Marc Richards, who will be strongly fancied to top the Cobblers goalscoring charts again this season, headed home the opener.

Alfie Potter showed some battling qualities to win the ball back before rounding the ‘keeper and adding the second early in the second half, sealing the win with his second and Northampton’s third late on.

Brackley: Dan Crane, Luke Graham, Stephan Morley, Greg Kaziboni, Curtis McDonald, Ryan Austin, Owen Story, Glenn Walker, Sam Smith, Tom Winters, Richard Batchelor
Substitutes: Tom Sharpe, Sam Whittall, David Moyo, Will Green, Jacob Borg, Dan Farrell

Cobblers: Adam Smith, Josh Lelan, David Buchanan, Jason Taylor, Zander Diamond, Ryan Cresswell, Lawson D`Ath, Joel Byrom, Marc Richards, Nicky Adams, Alfie Potter
Substitutes: Sam Warburton, Ryan Clarke, Rod McDonald, Tom Newey, Danny Clifton, Chris Hackett, John-Joe O`Toole

Chris Wilder named Tom Newey in the squad, a familiar face to Northampton following his loan with the club last season and the free agent, following his Oxford release, is bidding for a Sixfields return to work with Wilder once again.

One that continues to be linked with a move away, having previously been ‘set’ for Newcastle, is Toney with him omitted from the squad due to ongoing interest in the striker from more than one club but that club should see a move to Newcastle confirmed within a few days?
