Andy King couldn’t really have done anymore to put himself into the running to become the next Northampton boss could he?

Newport could prove to be his last in charge, at least in a caretaker capacity, but what he does know is that 2-1 win over the promotion candidates leaves David Cardoza with a harder decision to make.

He said: ‘I’ve loved it. I’ve got my spark back.

‘I’ve proved I’m a manager. I always knew I am a manager, but I didn’t shout it from the rooftops because there was no point because no-one was listening.

‘There have been no discussions at the moment, I haven’t thought about it too much.

‘I know they have probably spoken to other people, but all I can do is try and get Northampton to win football matches.

‘I’ve made their choice harder, but if they go with someone else I have made their job a little bit easier because now there is a real chance of us getting out of this position.’

Whatever happens next King’s right, thanks to his caretaker spell, the points secured including this potentially priceless one he’s put Northampton back into the survival hunt and helped improve the confidence.

That can only help whoever does become the next boss, with Chris Hargreaves approached about the job so it would seem that he’s the first choice option?
