Chris Wilder was keen to bring in a replacement for Ivan Toney and this was something Northampton secured ahead of the 2015/16 season with the Official Website confirming the arrival of Dominic Calvert-Lewin ahead of the Bristol Rovers win.

The loss of Toney, always expected mind, to Newcastle was a blow but this was softened by the loan arrival of Calvert-Lewin from Sheffield United until January with the Cobblers using an existing relationship with the Blades, which allowed us to sign Diego De Girolamo last season, to bring in the 18-year-old.

Calvert-Lewin might be a striker, so Toney’s been replaced, but he can also play in midfielder.

Upon his arrival Wilder commented.

‘With Ivan gone we were obviously looking to bring in another striker and we’re delighted to have signed Dominic.

‘He’s very highly rated at Sheffield United, he’s a great kid and hopefully he can add to what we’ve already got at the top of the pitch.’

Wilder also said he feels he’s another of those players people ‘haven’t heard about’ that will do a job, at least he’s hopeful that’s the case with him too.

Adding.

‘We always look to unearth players that maybe a lot of people haven’t heard about and that’s what we’ve done with Dominic.

‘We like what we’ve seen of him so far, he’s enthusiastic and he’s got the ability.’

A short-term loan wasn’t ever an option, the Cobblers boss doesn’t like these as we know, so we’ve secured him at Sixfields until January with Wilder adding ‘he will get well looked after’ and we’ll aide his development as he’ll ‘definitely be involved’ during his time with us, as he should be or why bring him in!

Calvert-Lewin has been given permission to feature for Northampton in the Capital One Cup.
