Chris Wilder is poised to make his first signing as Northampton boss with Alan Connell expected to sign from Bradford.

The striker, made available by the league one side, was being linked with non-league outfit Grimsby but Bradford boss Phil Parkinson confirmed talks were taking place with the deal almost done.

He said: ‘It’s a good move for Alan because he needs to play. It’s close to being done.’

Connell was scheduled to be out of contract with Bradford, who beat the Cobblers in last season’s league two play-off final, at the end of the season and would have left on a free transfer.

It is believed that Connell’s existing contract will simply be taken over by Northampton, so he is signing until the end of the season.
