Following their releases by Preston and Cheltenham, respectively, in January Joel Byrom and Jason Taylor have formed a good partnership at Northampton so it’s little surprise we want to keep them beyond their short-term deals.

Chris Wilder’s told the Chronicle that he wanted to get the ball rolling now instead of waiting until the end of the season, but knows we’ll have some ‘tough decisions’ to make.

‘We have talked to a couple of players, we have talked to Jason Taylor and Joel Byrom.

‘We have opened initial talks instead of doing it right at the end of the season, but there are tough decisions to make.’

Others coming to the end of their contracts include Lee Collins, Ben Tozer and Matt Duke and talks will start with the will be out of contract players soon enough but these two (Byrom and Taylor) form part of the ‘nucleus of a decent side’ that we currently have.

‘We will take every one on an individual case.

‘There is still something to play for, but we feel we have the nucleus of a decent side going forward.

‘Part of that is adding permanently to the squad Jason and Joel, who have been outstanding since they came to the club.’

He went onto talk about Accrington loanee Jimmy Gray and how a permanent move could be secured but he’s got another year on his Accrington contract so an agreement would have to be reached.
