Dream Debut: Wolves 2-3 Northampton

The Cobblers stunned last seasons league 1 champions as they stormed into the second round of the league cup.

Northampton let a commanding lead slip before coming again to secure a 3-2 upset over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league cup at Molineux on Tuesday.

After a goalless first half, which had seen three Wolves goals disallowed for offside, two for Leon Clarke and one from Liam McAlinden and Matt Duke also saved well from Matt Doherty’s 30-yard effort, the game burst into life just before the hour.

An inspired Northampton change reaped dividends with substitute Lawson D’Ath (58) marking his debut with a goal from just inside the area, this just two-minutes after arriving!

One became two when Ivan Toney (63) headed home a cross from Kaid Mohamed just five minutes later.

Wolves immediately summoned duo Bakary Sako and Nouha Dicko from the bench and an impact was instant as Dicko (66) halved the deficit by finishing McAlinden’s cross.

Just a minute later Wolves were level when Ricketts (67) fired home from 25-yards.

The home side would have, with momentum with them, been fancied to complete a comeback but D’Ath (74) hadn’t read the script as he struck his second as he headed home with a little over 15-minutes to play.
