Gary Johnson returns to Sixfields on Saturday, with his Cheltenham side, for the first time since he was sacked by Northampton in 2011 following a disappointing nine-month spell.

He’ll do this having told, or at least been quoted in the Chronicle, that he’s unsure of what sort of reaction he’ll be given!

Like any manager he knows that some love you and some hate you, regardless, but he says that he ‘pretty much enjoyed’ his time with us and has had plenty of praise for chairman David Cardoza.

‘I never know, because sometimes you read websites and some people hate you, whether you are top of the league or not, it doesn’t matter to some people.

‘But I pretty much enjoyed my time at Northampton.

‘It was a big job, but I think the chairman there, David Cardoza, does a fantastic job and I got on well with him and the board.’

Johnson, who replaced Ian Sampson in March 2011, won just six-matches from the 32 that he was in charge of and left us in November 2011 with us 20th in the League 2 and only three-points above safety.

He continued to offer praise to Cardoza, whilst pointing out that ‘the next few managers didn’t quite do it either’, and said that he hopes that we ‘move on because I think David Cardoza deserves it for the work he puts in.’

Currently in temporary charge of Cheltenham until the end of the season he’ll be looking to come to Sixfields, whatever reception he gets, to go away with all three-point that could take them out of the bottom two with them bottom when he arrived recently.
