Northampton recorded a priceless league two victory on Saturday as they shocked Newport with a 2-1 away win.

Andy King recorded his first win as Northampton boss, perhaps his only win with a new boss to be appointed anytime, but he savoured this as he feels the players should as well with a poor run put behind them.

It wasn’t a lucky with either, it was one that King feels the Cobblers more than deserved. He said: ‘We have been on a really bad run, but I thought they earned that win.

‘If we had got a lucky result I would say so, but we created a lot of chances and probably could have had a couple more.

‘It was a very entertaining game and my players were fantastic.

‘They showed skill, energy and then a determination to win the game, which I like.’

Hallam Hope made a dream start to his loan spell with the Cobblers as he opened the scoring but Newport levelled it up in first half injury time.

Northampton weren’t to be denied though with Darren Carter, cast aside by former boss Aidy Boothroyd, striking a 25-yarder in the second half to secure this shock win but it took a late Matt Duke penalty save to ensure this was the case.
