Northampton’s home defeat to Derby on Saturday was followed up by more Championship visitors when Birmingham arrived on Tuesday, this time a draw was secured.

I lose track of the times I say results aren’t the main thing in pre-season but two tough matches against decent, Derby are Championship favourites, sides a couple of leagues higher than the Cobblers have seen a narrow defeat and then a draw, so Chris Wilder will be happy on that score.

Had a Northampton lead been held the second, and final Sixfields pre-season, would have ended with a win but in the end the Cobblers had to be content with a ‘Desmond’, coming from behind to lead but the final result was a two-two.

Cobblers: Ryan Clarke, Josh Lelan, David Buchanan, Ryan Cresswell, Rod McDonald, John-Joe O`Toole, Paul Corry, Lawson D`Ath, Sam Hoskins, Nicky Adams, Ivan Toney
Substitutes: Zander Diamond, Joel Byrom, Alfie Potter, Marc Richards, Chris Hackett, Sam Warburton, Danny Clifton, Adam Smith

Birmingham: Adam Legzdins, Josh Cogley, Michael Morrison, Paul Robinson, Mitch Hancox, David Davis, Demarai Gray, Rostyn Griffiths, Peniel Mlapa, Andrew Shinnie, Lee Novak
Substitutes: Denny Johnstone, Nick Townsend, Viv Soloman-Otabor, Perry Cotton, Liam Truslove, Wes McDonald, Alfie Crooks

Demarai Gray put Birmingham ahead with only three-minutes played but a Nicky Adams goal just before half time meant it was one-one at the break.

Adams’ second saw a deficit overturned for the Northampton lead but the game ended in a draw when Lee Novak equalised for Gary Rowett’s side.

It’s getting towards decision time for Wilder with trialists Rod McDonald, Paul Corry and Sam Hoskins, all three once again started as they bid to earn deals this season, will they get them though?
