Northampton gained a measure of revenge for a league 2 defeat earlier in the season when we beat Portsmouth 2-1 at Fratton Park on Tuesday night to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy second round meeting.

Shortly before the half hour mark we took the lead, Darren Carter’s pas to David Moyo (28) gave him the chance, which he was happy to take finishing via the post to give us a one-nil lead.

This wasn’t a lead that we managed to hold for long though as Ryan Taylor (36) kept his calm to beat Tottenham Hotspur loanee ‘keeper Jordan Archer to make it one-one at the break.

Kaid Mohamed (55), who had come on before the break as an injury replacement for Marc Richards, restored our lead when he tapped home from Lawson D’Ath’s pullback.

We had further chances to secure the win but Ryan Cresswell’s hit the bar and Alex Nicholls, on his first start for us in almost two-years, missed a great chance as he ran clear but Portsmouth ‘keeper Paul Jones denied him.

D’Ath was fortunate to avoid a red card for a foul on Ricky Holmes as we advanced into Saturday’s third round draw with a two-one win.
