To all intent and purpose it was suspect that our top goalscorer Marc Richards’ season was effectively over following an operation on an Achilles injury in early March.

Ahead, speaking ahead of the trip to AFC Wimbledon on Good Friday, Chris Wilder delivered an update on his progress in the Chronicle.

Richards is now ‘out of the boot’, having been in a protective boot following surgery, and is now working to get himself back before the season is out. If we’re still in the play-off picture then Wilder have all but confirmed he’ll bring him back if he can, although he is mindful of rushing him back!

‘We are hopeful, and it will be a massive boost if we can get Rico back before the end of the season. But with Achilles injuries, they can`t be rushed and he has to see the time out.

‘He is doing work and will be eyeing games up at the end of the season, and if we are still in the hunt for the play-offs, it would be a massive boost to have him back amongst us.’

If we’re there or thereabout with the play-offs, or make them, then Richards if fit enough he’ll play some part with a ‘calculated risk’ take with the 17-goal man you feel, otherwise we save him for next season with the bigger picture in mind….

Again, ahead of that two-two draw with AFC Wimbledon Wilder said that we had ‘taken a punt’ on Accrington loanee James Gray.

‘James is a young player, and we took a punt on him. We looked around and there wasn’t much, which is no disrespect to James because we fancied taking him.

‘Sometimes you are out of favour at a club, and he has come here and endeared himself to our supporters with his commitment, his endeavour and work-rate but as always for him and other strikers, he will always be judged on goals and has got himself into good positions, and been a little bit unfortunate in that a couple of chances he has had, goalkeepers have made good saves.’

Not a bad punt so far is it! Wilder was ‘delighted that he scored’ in our win over Luton so he would have been over the moon with his brace at the Kingsmeadow Stadium!
