The trial of JJ Hooper has proved successful with the striker signing a contract with Northampton.

Hooper still has plenty to learn but with much potential Aidy Boothroyd, as he told the official website, feels he’s worth a punt.

He doesn’t expect him to be challenging the first team until the latter stages of the season though, he said: ‘He has an awful lot to do and a lot to learn but he has potential, how well he does and how far he goes is down to JJ.

‘JJ is a very talented individual, I expect him to be challenging for a first team place towards the end of the season.

‘We are giving him an opportunity to make a name for himself and to get his career going.’

Newcastle released the 19-year-old at the end of his contract this summer; he’s now signed a one-year deal with the Cobblers having the option of a second.

Should Hooper develop as hoped you’d imagine the striker will spend at least a couple of years at Sixfields.
