The league cup season gets underway for the Cobblers tonight; we’ll be hoping it isn’t a short-lived thing.

Northampton travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Molineux Stadium tonight looking to cause an upset in the first round of the league cup, something a fellow league 2 club did last season against them!

Fresh from a one-nil championship win against Norwich City, on a return to that level of both clubs, Wolves are likely to make changes with club captain Sam Ricketts likely to be one of them with Matt Doherty preferred to him at the weekend.

Northampton boss Chris Wilder was forced to bring off Darren Carter in the one-nil win over Mansfield Town and his tight hamstring could see him miss out.

Another reported doubt is Chris Hackett, who has an Achilles knock.

Wolves have won both the two previous league cup meetings, the only league cup meetings, and we’ve never beaten them before at Molineux in three games, they best we’ve managed was a draw.

With just one cleansheet in our last 27 away league cup games to have any chance of causing an upset, like Morecambe did against them last season, we’ll need to improve that record!

Can it be third time lucky with league cup meetings?
