The league two season continued for Northampton in midweek as they looked to keep building on recent form to maintain a survival bid.

Northampton went to St James Park to face Exeter City on Tuesday night in a massive ‘relegation six-pointer’, which the Cobblers ended winning 1-0.

There wasn’t much to get excited about in the first half of the game and Chris Wilder made his thoughts known to his players at half time with them giving the response he wanted to come out and win, with him knowing that as long as this it ‘taken on’ it could be a season turning win.

The Cobblers boss said: ‘If we take it on, it could be a big result. I have got a bit of a headache and lost my voice because we had to work extremely hard to get that result.

‘In the first half they weren’t at the races, they were better and sharper than us. We didn’t close the gaps or play with any quality – maybe the type of performance that put us in this position.

‘We were disappointed with it and we got into the players at half-time and we were the better side in the second half.

‘We had more quality out wide and the front two worked a touch harder out of possession and were a threat in possession.

‘We had a couple of good chances but Exeter gave it a go so we had to make sure we defended properly.

Ian Morris hadn’t been on the pitch for that long when he scored what proved to be the winning goal of the game.

The Cobblers boss was please with the second half reaction and knows what a big win it could end up being against the side that is now directly above them, and within touching distance.

He added: ‘They were better than us in the first half and possibly were a touch unfortunate to be only level at half-time. But we got a great reaction from the players and it is a big three points for us.’
