Late last week Alex Nicholls agreed to join Northampton Town from Walsall on a free transfer, or a ‘Bosman’ if you want to use official terminology. Something of an unknown to Cobblers fans as his name had not been mentioned by any fans or media as a possible transfer target, the club doing an impeccable job of undertaking their transfer business privately which is excellent.

On the face of it Nicholls looks like a decent addition to the Cobblers squad and should compliment the players already at Sixfields. Having spent his entire career at the Bescot Stadium with Walsall and racking up more than 200 appearances it is clear Town are signing a experienced player. Importantly Nicholls is experienced yet young, just 24 years of age, also he still has potential to improve and Boothroyd will feel he is the man to coach him into being a better footballer.

In front of goal Nicholls has hardly been prolific, a record of 28 career goals doesn’t exactly set the world alight but what is important to remember is that during much of his time at Walsall he has been used on the wing, Nicholls himself stating recently that one of the reasons for him turning down a new contract at Walsall was so he can get a chance in his preferred position, striker. On the face of it this looks like a replacement for Jake Robinson, similar sort of players although Alex Nicholls is twice as quick as Robinson.

There can be no doubt that Aidy Boothroyd is playing a big part in persuading players to sign at Sixfields, both additions so far this summer have turned down deals at their old clubs to sign for Northampton, something that bodes well for the future.
