This was a competitive match; Ian Henderson bore the scar of this, as he had to leave the field early on with a gash to his head from a boot.

It was Coventry that dominated the match early on, Kevin Kyle hit the bar and Michael Mifsud the post.
The first meaningful action for the Cobblers was after 10 minutes when Kirk had a shot cleared off the line. But the Skyblues had the vast majority of the possession and took the lead with Best on 21 minutes. Best was worrying unmarked in the area.
Gray stated on ntfc official site that he was disappointed with the Cobblers` slow start, feeling the team gave Coventry too much respect. He also felt that the team is still lacking in sharpness. But overall he felt the game was a good competitive one.

Bunn made a number of excellent saves after the goal and did well to keep the lead to only one.

In the second half Coventry had a goal ruled out for offside. The Cobblers` goal came from a mistake from City`s goalkeeper clearing straight to Cobblers` trialist Howe. He saw his goal bound shot handled on the line by City captain Ward. The referee had little option but send him off and award the penalty, which Kirk dully dispatched.

The result means Cobblers` maintain their unbeaten preseason run. Andy Holt put in another excellent attacking performance. What is worrying is the injury to captain Chris Doig which seems to be ongoing.

Next up West Brom.
