Hartlepool once again surrendered a lead as a winning position was lost at Stevenage, with their own play-off place strengthened with our own unlikely attempts to finish in the top seven all but over after this defeat on Saturday.

This two-one setback at Broadhall Way leaves us seven-points adrift of Plymouth, who occupy the seventh and finish play-off spot, but with only four-matches left to play. Stevenage on the other hand stay in sixth and with a three-point cushion, and superior goal-difference, advantage over Newport in eighth.

With half time almost with us, and goalless half looking on, we took the lead when Byrom’s freekick was smashed home by defender Diamond (39) to give Stevenage ‘keeper Day no chance and make sure we were one-up at the break.

Approaching the midway point of the second half Whelpdale (65) headed home a Parrett’s freekick to make it one-one.

For us a point wouldn’t have been enough, but a defeat definitely isn’t, which is what we suffered when Walton (90) came off the bench to make an instant impact and win it for Stevenage, with our misery compounded by Cresswell’s sending off for a second yellow card deep into injury-time.

The play-off bid might be over but the season isn’t and we’ll look to respond against Chris Wilder’ former side Oxford, but will we?
